Robbie is out on his last night of freedom. Michelle is out on her last night in Manchester. Ten years ago they missed their moment – will they let it pass them by again? Last Orders is a play about new starts, last chances and near misses.
Monkeywood Theatre first premiered Last Orders, written by Sarah McDonald Hughes, in the Royal Exchange’s sell-out PUB season. The Exchange’s studio was transformed into a local watering hole for performances of drama, poetry, music and stories. Monkeywood Theatre have been earning a reputation for producing ambitious, innovative and accessible high quality theatre since 2003. They are a Manchester based company whose work has an emphasis on new writing, untold stories and unheard voices. Their previous work includes the Arts Council England funded national tour of Maine Road in 2010 and A Song for the Lovers, produced at The Lowry in 2008.

Monkeywood is one of the most exciting young theatre companies to come out of Manchester in the last 7 years.
— Ian Tabbron, Head of Theatre, Arts Council England North West
Innovative writing and slick performances ensure Monkeywood continue to swing high from the bar they have raised for other emerging talent in the North-West
— Porl Cooper, Theatres Programmer, The Lowry
Monkeywood are described as an ‘emerging’ theatre company. I would say that they have now arrived and I can only hope that they are here to stay.
— Calum Kerr, Whatsonstage
Hip, edgy and watchable new writing, Coach G is well-served by a talented young cast.
— City Life
A small cast in a small theatre but still with excellent writing and acting which shone out.
— Whats on Stage Best Productions of 2008.
It’s not hard to see why the BBC were so enthusiastic about the radio version of this play (Maine Road). Great stuff, with some tremendous performances.
— Manchester Evening News
It is unique, sad, nostalgic, warm and occasionally funny, it is also about families and Manchester City – which in my eyes makes it one of the finest pieces of theatre I have ever witnessed.
