Do you fancy searching and collecting, sneaking and peeking, chasing and racing round one of Manchester’s most beautiful landmarks for one day only? Then join Larkin’ About for The History Game and find out more about Manchester spending a day playing indoor and outdoor games.
Pervasive games fuse the spectacle of theatre with the thrill of playing games. They allow us to explore our surroundings in a new, fun and immediate way.

Prairieland by Bren O’Callaghan (30 mins) Between 11.00am & 3.00pm
The vaulted stone corridors of Manchester Town Hall are teeming with bison and elk, beaver and deer.
But they’re not on the floor… they’re on the ceiling. Navigate a brace of helium-filled Sioux to capture a
series of spirit animals camouflaged in full sight within this gothic warren.

After exotic birds escaped their cages from the old pet shops on Tib Street, one shy species made its
home in the nooks and crannies of Manchester Town Hall. To ensure their continued survival, resident
ornithologist, Rosemary Dudcott, needs your help to prove that the elusive birds still exist…

Lions After Slumber by Gareth Cutter (50 mins) 12.00pm & 2.30pm
It’s August 16th 1819 and over 50,000 people are demonstrating for the right to vote. The local
magistrates have ordered the meeting be put to a stop. It’s up to you to follow the clues, evade capture
by the cavalry and spread the truth about what really happened at the Peterloo Massacre.
Not suitable for very young children (6 and under). May involve running – comfortable footwear essential.

Your boss Rosy “Smiley” Weller has been double-crossed. It’s your job to take revenge on her behalf by
stealing the money for her from the shady Fat Harry. Beware of the guard dog.

This event is delivered by the Library Theatre Company and Larkin’ About for Manchester
Histories Festival.
Some of the games take place outside so wrap up warm and wear comfortable shoes.
Mobile phones are useful but not essential.

By bus
There are bus stops in St Peter’s Square, Albert Square and on Princess Street. For more details about buses to the Town Hall please contact the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive on 0161 228 7811.
By train or Metrolink
If you are travelling to Manchester by train you can get a Metrolink tram from Piccadilly, Victoria and Deansgate train stations to St Peter’s Square, which is the nearest Metrolink station to the Town Hall complex.
By car
Please note: If you are using a Sat. Nav. system the geographic post code for the town hall is M2 5DB.
Parking is often difficult around the Town Hall complex. You may be able to find a space in one of the pay and display parking bays. There are a small number of spaces reserved for disabled drivers at the front of Central Library in St Peter’s Square. You must have a disabled parking permit to use one of these spaces. In addition, there is limited space on Lloyd Street directly outside the Town Hall for disabled drivers and contractors – please contact 0161 234 1671 for more information.
There are a number of car parks in Manchester city centre operated by NCP. Contact them on 0870 606 7050 or visit their website to find out where they are and current charges.
How to get into the Town Hall
There are four entrances. The main entrance to the Town Hall building is in Albert Square, the second entrance on Lloyd Street. The extension also has two entrances, one on Lloyd street and one in St Peter’s Square. There is a reception point at each of the four entrances.
Both the entrances to the Town Hall building have steps, however, there is a ramp next to the Lloyd Street entrance. The two entrances to the Town Hall extension are at street level with no steps.
